April 2021 ~
Incline Sports, a nonprofit basketball institution based in Eugene, Oregon, needed a design to communicate confidence, passion, and personality. The aesthetic needed to build a connection between the graphics and the organization’s number one mantra; there are no ceilings in a player's quest for greatness.
In 2020, Incline faced challenges securing consistent gym space to host its workouts. As the business continued to grow, it became clear that it was time to take the next big step. Over the next year and a half, the Incline team has worked tirelessly to create a permanent home for its athletes. As the graphic designer, I was responsible for leading the court design process.
1. The facility will be used by athletes of all ages. We envisioned the facility used to be in high school tournaments, practice court for teams visiting the Oregon Ducks, trainings with W/NBA players, and adult open gyms.
2. Incline’s main objective is to provide trainings for elementary to high school kids. It was important that we do not use a color palette that is affiliated with any specific school in the Eugene/ Springfield area.
3. We want to stand out from the others. This goes without saying, but we’re not here to be mediocre. We’re here to be great.
Extensive research was conducted on court designs across the country, along with various wood treatment techniques, to prepare for the project. The design process was strategically divided into four key components: out-of-bounds areas, court layout, center logo, and color schemes, resulting in over 100 unique combinations. In collaboration with gym floor specialists, a one-of-a-kind court design was developed.
After a year and a half of development - from the initial concept to seven months of building renovations and court construction - The FIVE Arena officially opened its doors to the community amid great anticipation. Since its launch, the community has continued to grow, and The FIVE Arena has established itself as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility.
